The Ekuona, also known as Ekuo ne Asimpi and sometimes Asokorefuo, symbolized by the Buffalo (Ɛkuo), represents honesty, uprightness, strength, and integrity. Within Akan culture, the Ekuona are respected for their truthfulness, stability, and deep commitment to tradition. Regarded as one of the oldest and most foundational clans. Oral tradition also credits the Ekuona clan with introducing the institution of the Okyeame, or linguist, into the Akan chieftaincy system during the 15th century under Nana Awurade Basa of Adanse.
If Ekuona greets you, the response is “Yaa Kuona” or “Yaa Obatanpa,” which reflects their identity and heritage.
